On Sunday 29th May 2016 30 members of the John Whitgift Community attended England v Wales rugby union international at Twickenham. On a glorious day the turn out was tremendous with over 81,000 people being the stadium. The likes of Mr Tuffnell, Mrs Sowerby, Miss Winn, Mrs Smith and Mr Burkill attended with Harrison Barrell being one of the students in attendance. Harrison had to take to the field in the John Whitgift rugby strip and partake in the National anthem. Harrison as always was a a marvellous ambassador for the Academy and may one day himself be lining up as an international.
The visit was part of the All Schools project that John Whitgift were chosen to participate in during the build up to the rugby world cup in 2015. As part of the project the rugby team has been developed and extra coaching for the students was supplied via rugby England. Additional help with kit also followed and this has now led to John Whitgift Academy having every chance of success in the following months. Mr Tuffnell was also interviewed whilst at Twickenham as part of the project and most of the current KS4 squad visited and met the England team at a coaching session prior to the world cup.
